EARLIER CAMPAIGNS – From 2011:
TOKEN SKEPTIC PODCAST SPECIAL EPISODE – 10:23 Campaign In Australia, 2011.
Since early October 2010, I’ve been working on coordinating the nation-wide campaign for 10:23 in Australia.
Mostly this has involved suggesting ideas and strategies, providing links and resources – while maintaining the independence of each city to brainstorm and network to come up with plans that best suit their different situations. This has meant some adaptations on the ‘usual’ homeopathic claims and some thoughtful efforts to not just criticise, but praise publications and groups that raise awareness and support questioning of homeopathy (rather than just perpetuate a nay-saying stereotype of skeptics).
For my own part, since I won’t be in the country at the time of the Campaign, I’ve been working on two podcast/vodcast ventures and a site, which wouldn’t have been possible without feedback and resources from the likes of Desiree Schell of Skeptically Speaking, Barbara Drescher (of ICBS Everywhere), Digital Cuttlefish and Michael McRae (Tribal Scientist). I’m also working with Matthew Rodgers on a fantastic project yet to be unveiled and I hope that it will be out soon!
Swoopy of Skepticality has also been an invaluable sounding board and everything has been wonderfully outlined by the 10:23 Campaign ‘Central’ over in the UK – Michael Marsh and all the Merseyside Skeptics team behind the scenes. I’m really looking forward to meeting them in person at the QED Convention!
But primarily I’m incredibly grateful to the following people who have been working hard behind the scenes and taken charge for each city – in some cases, networking with several groups in order to raise awareness – and even launch a new group in coordination with this campaign!
Sydney – Paul Caggegi and his team in NSW who have an event planned that weekend in conjunction with some other interested groups – do check out the forthcoming videos planned by Paul, who works as a motion-graphics artist, video editor and 3D effects creator, and the sites of participants like ‘Bastard Sheep‘!
Melbourne and Geelong – Chris Higgins of the Melbourne Skeptics – they’ll be holding the Melbourne Skeptics Official Launch Party on January 31st 2011 at James Squires Brewhouse in Docklands.
This is in conjunction with members of the Victorian Skeptics (Matthew Kippen, Mal Vickers and Terry Kelly) and the soon-to-be-launched Great Ocean Road Skeptics – being launched on Saturday 5th February at 10 am at Bell’s Beach Torquay (very exciting!)
Canberra – represented by Andrew ‘Arthwollipot’ Gould and skeptics in Canberra – Andrew runs the Rational Capital podcast;
Launceston – represented by Jin-oh Choi (Launceston Skeptics is over in Tasmania, but they are still eagerly brainstorming to take part in a global campaign);
Brisbane – represented by Jayson Cooke and the skeptics and freethinkers (including the GUSSF) – who have maintained a resilience in the face of recent tragedies in that state and are pressing on with plans for the campaign regardless!
Perth – Dan Buzzard and a number of keen members of the Perth Skeptics. A great group of people who I’ve had the great pleasure of interacting with at various social events (and we’ll probably all be at the Perth Tim Minchin concerts – another local – later in March too!).
Thanks to everyone who is taking part, planning activities, writing emails and letters and I look forward to contributing with these individuals and groups towards raising awareness in a thoughtful and productive manner about the claims of homeopathy and joining the global ranks of #ten23.

- During the time I’ve reflected on 10:23, I’ve transcribed the following by Professor Bruce ‘Supersense’ Hood from the Token Skeptic interview: http://www.csicop.org/specialarticles/show/interview_with_bruce_m._hood
- There is also the podcast interview I’ve done with Michael McRae about activism: http://tokenskeptic.org/2010/02/05/episode-nine-on-skepticism-and-communication – done right after I did the 10:23 in Perth in 2010, with a group of people.

The 10:23 Campaign
The 10:23 Campaign aims to raise awareness about the reality of homeopathy. We will tell you how it can be shown not to work, why homeopaths’ claims are impossible, why you should care.
The campaign is organised by the Merseyside Skeptics Society, a non-profit organisation for the promotion of scientific skepticism. More information about Merseyside Skeptics is available on their website.
