With many, many thanks to the organisers of QEDCon – here’s a special episode from a lecture at the convention, that has to be heard to be believed.

Chris Atkins is the director of both BAFTA nominated Taking Liberties and the 2009 tour-de-force Starsuckers. The documentary Starsuckers involved the production team planting fake celebrity-related stories in the UK media, such as a claim that the singer Avril Lavigne had fallen asleep in a nightclub and how a variety of tabloid newspapers accepted the stories without corroboration or evidence.

He’s a clear voice in accessibly exposing how the public are manipulated through the real-world motivations of the media in creating and perpetuating news and celebrity. As the perpetrator of the recent ‘Urban Fox Hunter’ hoax, Chris demonstrated the ease by which the national and international media can be fooled.
